The South African Police Service (SAPS) invites applications from young, disciplined, and service-oriented South African citizens who are interested in a career in law enforcement. This program offers the opportunity to serve and protect communities while developing essential skills in policing.
ABOUT THE SAPS TRAINEE PROGRAMME
The SAPS Trainee Programme is a structured training and development initiative designed to prepare recruits for careers in the police service. The programme runs over a period of 21 months and consists of both academic and practical components.
Successful candidates will undergo training in accordance with the Basic Police Development Learning Programme (BPDLP) and will be appointed as Constables upon successful completion.
TRAINING STRUCTURE
Phase 1: Academy Phase

Duration: 12 months

Location: SAPS Training Academies nationwide

Content: Law, police procedures, human rights, ethics, physical fitness, firearms training, and basic policing.
Phase 2: Workplace Exposure
-
Duration: 9 months
-
Location: Assigned SAPS police stations or units
-
Content: Supervised field training involving real-world policing tasks and community service.
MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must:
-
Be a South African citizen by birth
-
Be 18 to 30 years old
-
Possess a Grade 12 / Matric certificate (National Senior Certificate)
-
Be proficient in English and at least one other official language
-
Be medically, physically, and mentally fit (candidates will undergo testing)
-
Have no criminal record or pending cases
-
Be willing to undergo screening and background checks
-
Be willing to serve anywhere in South Africa
-
Have no visible tattoos when wearing a SAPS uniform
-
Be unemployed and not enrolled in any learning institution
-
Not be affiliated with any criminal organization or activities
A valid driver’s license and post-matric qualifications are advantageous but not mandatory.
REMUNERATION AND BENEFITS
During Training:

Monthly stipend: Approximately R4,500 to R5,000
-
Free training, accommodation, and meals during the academy phase
After Training:
-
Permanent appointment as a Constable
-
Annual salary range: Approximately R222,000 to R270,000
-
Medical aid, pension, housing allowance, and other government benefits
