Job Description
This role is individually accountable for:
- The management and growth of the SME Credit and Lending Portfolio strategic direction and implementation through the SME lending partner.
- Working with an outsourced credit portfolio management function to build an in-house credit portfolio management capability.
- Enabling synergies between the SME lending partner and Old Mutual resulting in business growth and shareholder value.
Key Result Areas
Credit Risk Appetite Strategy :
- Playing an active and key role in setting the Old Mutual Corporate (OMC) SME Lending strategy by understanding and articulating key macroeconomic forecasts, country landscape, regulations and microeconomic themes, industry, and sector developments, all in a forward-looking perspective with an objective of integrating the SME lending into the Old Mutual Group
- Working with group risk and outsourced credit portfolio management function, to drive the development and implementation of an OMC SME Lending Risk framework to identify, mitigate, monitor, and report on credit risk (including economic and capital risk), with a focus on understanding and articulating key macroeconomic forecasts, country landscape, regulations and microeconomic themes, industry, and sector developments, with a primary focus on the impact on Credit Risk.
- Using OMC SME strategy choices made to build Credit Risk Appetite using the established framework(s)
- Developing and using data, metrics, and dashboards to monitor risk appetite utilization, and set benchmarks, triggers, and actions to manage risk appetite
- Review the lending frameworks, target market criteria and product conditions for alignment with the credit risk appetite.
Credit Risk Management :
- Drive the use of key indicators to control lending activities within the risk appetite.
- Reviewing and supporting the Impairment process with SME lending business partner
- Support the development and maintenance of credit Risk models including both Credit Scoring and Credit provisioning models as well as IFRS 9 models.
- Providing oversight of the SME lending business partner’s credit risk profile through a combination of leading and lagging indicators including coverage and impairment against Plans.
- Ensuring conformance to Old Mutual policies, standards, and procedures.
- Analysis of risk-related management information to allow decisions to be made regarding the loan book, loan products and loan processes.
Credit Risk Sanctioning:
- Embedding of set standards of credit quality. These would be done through sanctioning standards, sample reviews of sanctioning decisions and regular reviews of the performance of credit scoring models.
- Oversight of the performance of loan administration, monitoring, and recovery processes.
- Monitor adherence to Lending Discretion limits
- Maintain interactive relationships with SME lending business partners and the Audit and Risk Committee of the lending partner board.
- Review the overall portfolio yields, challenge pricing and the lending strategy applied to maximise value.
- Reviewing impairment provisioning
- Oversee conformance with a set grading system for internal and for regulatory purposes.
- Ensure strict adherence to the processes of monitoring loan facility and product covenants and credit risk triggers.
Enabling Business Synergies:
- Identify and implement integration opportunities between OML and SME lending partners, distinguishing between short, medium and long-term objectives
- Monitor and report on integration outcomes
- Manage role differences between OML shareholder and OML wholesale lender as it relates to the SME lending business partner
Reporting and Administrative:
- Working with finance business partners and SME Lending Partner, to ensure that financial records support complete and efficient management and control of the lending activities and quality of the loan book.
- Coordinating reporting to cover the loan portfolio for the SME lending business partner
- Ensuring SME lending business partner’s reporting standards meet the requirements of OML
- Ensuring escalation (exception) reporting related to credit exposures is adhered to avoid breaches.
- Attend selected committees charged with the responsibilities of managing or controlling credit risks.
- Attend relevant committees at Old Mutual Group in support of or as an alternate to the OMC SME Director
Qualifications, skills and experience required:
- Relevant Actuarial degree/CA (SA) and relevant post-graduate qualification geared toward finance and investments
- 10 years + of relevant experience in financial services with a specific focus on SME Credit Management (including deal structuring)
- Ability to interpret financial statements, ratios and concepts
- Proficient credit modelling skills
- Good turnaround time on deliverables
